FOCUS OF THE MONTH

National Societies Meeting, at ESTRO 38, Milan

SAVE THE DATE: 26 APRIL 2019

On this occasion, we are glad to invite you to submit requests to the National Societies Meeting next year, 2019, that will be held in conjunction with the ESTRO 38 Annual Congress in Milan from 26 - 30 April. Accommodating feedback from the gathering earlier this year in Barcelona, two major changes will mark next years' programme differentiating it from previous editions. The first, being that the assembly will convene around 10:30AM to lodge requests for those traveling early in the morning and run until the end of the day. Secondly, speakers on behalf of the National Societies will be part of the programme.

WHAT WILL THE AGENDA LOOK LIKE?

The general format, with updates from the ongoing projects will remain similar to the existing schedule with numerous dedicated sessions for societies to participate. Moreover, we are pleased to invite you to enhance the value of this occasion by contributing to the programme as a Representative on behalf of your National Society. In order to give you a better idea of what could be included, please find a list of potential items below:

  1. POSITION of radiotherapy in your country
  2. ACTION and support medical professional and students in the field of radiotherapy

  4. INFLUENCE decision makers

In particular, to the benefit of fellow societies it is encouraged that reference is made to:

  • Best Practices
  • Partnerships with other societies /hospitals / universities and/ or public institutions
  • Gaps and areas of special attentions showcasing by exemplifications
  • SUCCESS stories

Taking the above information into account, please provide a short description of your presentation by email to Gabriella Axelsson gaxelsson@estro.org before 31 August. A selection of 5 - 6 sessions will be made by the National Societies Committee based on the submissions received.

Support for strengthened EU cooperation on HTA

Stakeholders confirm their support for the strengthened EU cooperation on Health Technology Assessment (HTA). On 9 July over 300 policy makers, healthcare providers, patient representatives and other experts gathered in Brussels to discuss their views on HTA. Conclusions made, stated that after 20 years of joint work, more room should be made for structuring HTA across Europe in order to advance optimal use of resources and the sharing of expertise across Europe.

Complete programme, presentations as well as video recoding available here.
The input from patients, health professionals and industry in HTA discussion is essential:

"We now have an opportunity to establish a mechanism that ensures that HTA is used to its maximum potential throughout the EU. I believe that joint assessments would not only help patients to have access to the most effective health technologies, but would also contribute to the sustainability of health systems. The broad involvement of stakeholders also ensures quality and predictability. Moreover, I believe that our proposal would bring more transparency in the HTA processes in the EU."

-Commissioner  Vytenis Andriukaitis
